Carnelian is a translucent to opaque variety of chalcedony, a cryptocrystalline quartz mineral, ranging in colour from red, orange, brown and pink through to an intense almost-black depending on its mineral composition. Its name comes from the Latin word for flesh, and it has been used throughout history both symbolically and as a semi-precious gemstone in jewellery.
