Carnelian is a translucent to opaque variety of chalcedony, a cryptocrystalline quartz mineral.  Depending on the mineral composition, carnelian can range in colour from red, orange, brown and pink to an intense almost-black coloration.  It's name comes from a Latin word meaning "flesh."

Carnelian has been used throughout history both symbolically and as a semi-precious gemstone used in jewellery.

Carnelian is a powerful healing stone of transformation.  It is considered to be grounding and stabilising and is used for wealth and wisdom.  It promotes self esteem, increases willpower and energy levels, stimulates creativity, sharpens concentration, banishes emotional negativity, relieves stress, boosts fertility and sexuality and aids in healing ailments of the skin, blood, liver, spleen and lungs.
